So what is Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT)? It’s an advanced form of manual therapy that combines motor control theory and muscle testing. It can aid your body’s healing by teaching it to unlearn muscle movements and functions that it’s become accustomed to as a result of a previous injury, trauma or overuse.

For example if you’ve been in an accident which resulted in whiplash, the muscles in the back of your neck become tight and painful. As a result of this, the brain tells the other surrounding neck muscles to overcompensate for the injured ones, which results in pain and discomfort across the entire area. If this isn’t treated effectively at the time, the brain will think that this is how your body is supposed to be. NKT uses touch and pressure to retrain the movement patterns of those muscles and ensures the correct movements are once again stored in the brain.

How does the therapy work in practice? Your therapist will carry out a number of precise muscle tests that will identify where the wrong movement pattern is in your body and as a result where the root of the pain lies. The reaction of your body to different movements, pressure and stances will be tested so that we can diagnose the cause of your overcompensations. You will then be asked to carry out a series of small movements that with repetition over time, will help retrain your brain to ensure it continues to carry out the correct movement patterns automatically.

NeuroKinetic Therapy can be used to asses and rehabilitate a number of different injuries including: lower back and neck pain, running injuries, carpel tunnel syndrome, chronic or unresolved pain, tight muscles and many more.
