Dry needling is a procedure we offer that provides tension and pain relief by inserting fine filament needles into the muscles. The needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points (also known as knots in the muscle) loosening them and often providing almost instant relief. It has similarities to acupuncture (mainly the filament needles) but it’s not the same, the fundamental difference being the theory behind each treatment. Acupuncture focuses on restoring the flow of energy through critical points in the body, whereas dry needling focuses on reducing pain and restoring movement and function to the affected area.

It is a very safe treatment that uses single use, sterile needles that come individually packed. As the needles are so fine, generally you don’t feel them being inserted and very rarely does any bleeding or bruising occur. You may feel a light twitch or slight muscle contraction but that’s the body’s natural reaction to the treatment and is a sign that it’s working effectively. This form of therapy is performed by our skilled, trained physical therapists who are certified in the procedure.

You may be wondering which type of injuries dry needling is used for and whether or not it’s for you. The fact is that it can be used for a wide range of musculoskeletal issues such as back, shoulder, neck, heel and hip pain or discomfort. It’s often combined with other forms of therapy including massage and exercise routines to maximise the effectiveness of the treatment. If you’re in need of pain relief or are feeling restricted movement in parts of your body then dry needling could be the ideal treatment for you.
